Neale, Australia Post’s postal manager for retail services for Coffs Harbour, says he has moved 10metres in 34 years, via Sydney. He began work as a teenage management trainee in the old Coffs Harbour Waltons store, now part of the Coffs Central shopping centre which houses the Australia Post shop, his office and his staff of 17.

After 34 years with Australia Post, 19 ½ in Coffs Harbour, he is now the longest-serving person in the role of postal manager for Coffs Harbour in the history of the local post office.

Today identity services are an important and growing part of the help Neale and his staff provide.

The post office is now the place to go to apply for documents like birth certificates, marriage certificates and death certificates.

Australia Post carry out all documentation for the issue and renewal of both Australian and British passports and they also carry out all the administrative functions for issuing Responsible Service of Alcohol and Responsible Conduct of Gambling certificates and for Workcover tickets required by tradesmen. Auspost also handles hundreds of agency and payment transactions for government bodies, banks, insurance companies and utility organisations like electricity and gas suppliers.

This is in addition to letters and parcels and the wide range of merchandise available in the retail shop, from stationery, cards and packaging to books, toys and games.

“We fill a role in the community which saves individuals an enormous amount of time and effort,” Neale said.
