Ocean Preservation
The Gowings Whale Trust was established to protect and preserve our oceans and marine life and 100% of profits from branded merchandise sales reaches the trust to be used to further marine research, ocean preservation and other direct-action causes.
Our ‘1% for the Oceans’ commitment means that 1% of all sales from our Surf Hardware Company also goes to the Trust to further fund those causes.
Recycling
Separate recycling bins are now available throughout the centre, making it easier for visitors to sort their waste properly. In addition, soft plastics recycling has been introduced, allowing customers to dispose of items like plastic bags responsibly.
For coffee lovers, the centre has also installed coffee cup separation stations, ensuring that both the cups and lids can be recycled efficiently.
Community
Gowings Coffs Central’s community garden provides a space where food retailers can connect with nature and grow their own fresh produce as well as utilise the fresh produce grown by the Gowings Coffs Central team.
By reducing the need for transportation of fresh produce, the community garden helps lower the centre’s environmental footprint.
Environment
Gowings Coffs Central is home to an intelligent commercial food waste composter – organic waste is being turned into compost overnight.
“In most instances, organic waste from Coffs Central’s restaurants, cafes, grocer and butcher would end up in landfill,” explains Gowings’ Chief Sustainability Officer Byron Gowing. “Coffs Central tenants can now place their food scraps, coffee grounds, meat offcuts and more in the CLO100.”
“A day later it will have produced a nutrient-rich soil that can be used by community and home gardeners.”
Green Energy
Gowings Coffs Central has taken a major step towards sustainability by installing rooftop solar panels, significantly reducing the centre’s carbon footprint. These solar panels harness renewable energy from the sun, helping to power the centre and reducing reliance on non-renewable sources. By generating clean, green energy on-site, Gowings Coffs Central not only cuts down on electricity costs but also contributes to a more sustainable future for the community.
In addition, LED lighting has also been installed at Gowing shopping centres to reduce energy consumption.
Retail Businesses
The retail businesses owned and operated by Gowing Bros. are leading the charge toward sustainability by setting ambitious goals to eliminate all plastic packaging.
Committed to reducing their environmental footprint, these businesses are actively transitioning to the use of reclaimed and recycled materials in their products and packaging.
By prioritising eco-friendly alternatives, they are not only minimising waste but also supporting the circular economy.
